I thought cactus plants grew very slowly, I was wrong. It is a week between these two photos! I hope it will slow down so it doesn't get

Camilla, that looks like a prickly pear variety of cactus. They often cover hillside here in California. Perhaps keeping it in a small pot will help slow it's growth from it's intended size of 4-6 feet.
