are you talking about gradation? I think it's because it's like a sunset or sunrise- or other ways we see it in nature, like the wood pile. Now we like it in 'ombre' hair coloring.
I love these photos! I think that piles (of any kind) appeal to us because humans always have a desire to store things - it makes us feel safe. Food, fuel, objects; they all comfort us and make us feel secure. I believe that's what it is.

I always find myself drawn to wood and that wood pile is amazing. Image all the years of growth that is represented there.
